CORROSION RESISTANCE

• High amounts of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen make Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel more corrosion-resistant than 316 and 316L grades.
• Provides protection against pitting and crevice corrosion, even in tough or acidic environments.
• Resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking.
• Handles temperatures up to 302°F (150°C).
• Ferrite in its structure helps it work well in caustic conditions.
• Suitable for challenging environments.

HEAT RESISTANCE

• Duplex 2205 has good oxidation resistance at high temperatures, similar to other duplex stainless steels.
• Becomes brittle when exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even for short periods.
• Not recommended for use at temperatures above 572°F (300°C).

Welding Characteristics

• Duplex 2205 has good weldability.
• Should not be welded without filler metal, as this can lead to excessive ferrite content.

Traitement thermique

• Annealing temperature range is between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
• Cannot be hardened by heat treatment but does work-harden.
• Special attention is needed to handle a higher thermal expansion rate to avoid warping and distortion.

PROCESSING – HOT FORMING

Most producers suggest keeping the hot forming temperature for Duplex 2205 between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the shape isn’t compact, the edges can cool faster than the center, which might cause cracking.

PROCESSING – COLD FORMING

Duplex 2205 can be formed in different ways, but its high strength makes it more challenging. Even with strong equipment, you need to account for extra spring-back because of its strength.

MACHINABILITY

Duplex 2205 stainless steel is a bit harder to machine than 300 series stainless steels. It needs more cutting force, which makes tools wear out faster. Here are some machining tips:

• Use a strong, rigid machine with solid tool and workpiece mounts.
• Keep tool extensions short to reduce vibration.
• Avoid a large tool nose radius to keep the carbide sharp but strong.
• Plan the machining so the cut depth stays below the hardened layer from previous passes.
