CP Grade 3 Titanium Pipe Manufacturer

CP Grade 3 titanium pipe is a commercially pure titanium product known for its balanced combination of moderate strength and excellent corrosion resistance. With titanium content of approximately 99.1% and controlled oxygen levels between 0.10-0.27%, Grade 3 offers higher mechanical properties than Grades 1 and 2. This specific oxygen content is the key differentiator, providing increased strength while retaining the inherent corrosion resistance of pure titanium.

In terms of mechanical performance, CP Grade 3 features a tensile strength around 450-485 MPa and a yield strength of 380-415 MPa, all while maintaining good ductility with 20-30% elongation. This makes it stronger than Grade 1 and Grade 2 but less strong than Grade 4 or titanium alloys like Grade 5, positioning it as a versatile “middle-strength” option within the commercially pure titanium series.

Applications of CP Grade 3 titanium

CP Grade 3 titanium pipes find extensive applications across various industries due to their excellent corrosion resistance and moderate strength. In the chemical processing industry, they are widely used for heat exchangers, condensers, and piping systems that handle corrosive chemicals and chlorides. The marine sector relies on these pipes for seawater cooling systems, desalination plants, and offshore platform components where resistance to saltwater corrosion is critical.

The oil and gas industry utilizes CP Grade 3 pipes for downhole tubing and surface equipment exposed to harsh environments. In power generation, particularly in geothermal and coastal plants, these pipes serve in condensers and heat transfer systems. The aerospace industry employs them for hydraulic systems and fuel lines where weight savings and corrosion resistance are priorities.

Medical applications include surgical implants and medical devices that benefit from titanium’s biocompatibility. Additionally, the food processing and pharmaceutical industries use CP Grade 3 pipes for equipment requiring sanitary conditions and resistance to cleaning chemicals. Their combination of weldability, formability, and durability makes them suitable for custom fabrication across these diverse applications.

Comparison of Grade 3 titanium pipes with other pure titanium grades

CP Grade 3 titanium pipe sits in a practical middle ground within the commercially pure titanium series. Think of it as a balance between strength and formability.

Grade 1 is the softest and most easily formed, perfect for complex deep-drawing applications, but it has the lowest strength. Grade 2 is the workhorse of the titanium industry—it’s slightly stronger than Grade 1 while still offering excellent corrosion resistance and weldability, which is why it’s the most commonly used grade.

This is where CP Grade 3 comes in. With a higher oxygen content, it provides significantly more strength than Grade 2, making it suitable for pressure vessels and piping systems where Grade 2 might not be robust enough. However, this extra strength means it’s slightly less formable than the lower grades.

Grade 4 is the strongest of all the commercially pure grades, but it sacrifices much of the ductility that makes the other grades easy to work with.

For most piping applications, the choice often comes down to Grade 2 versus Grade 3. If your project demands higher pressure ratings and mechanical strength, Grade 3 is the superior choice. If you need maximum formability for complex shapes, Grade 2 might be more suitable. Essentially, you choose Grade 3 when strength is a higher priority than ease of fabrication.

Advanced Production: Titanium Welded Tube

Titanium Welded Tube: Diameter ranges from 6.0mm to 1219mm, wall thickness ranges from 0.3mm to 30mm (depending on diameter), length up to 25000mm, made from Gr1 titanium tube. Welded tubes are made from flat rolled billets (tube blanks) on electric tube welding machines using automatic tungsten inert gas (argon) welding, and heat treated on the mill line. Mechanical tests, geometric measurements, 100% ultrasonic and eddy current testing, pneumatic or hydrostatic testing are performed before the finished titanium welded tubes are packaged according to customer specifications. Manufacturing technology as well as inspection and testing equipment ensure that thin wall welded tubes meet ASTM B 338 and ASME SB 338 specifications.

CP Grade 3 titanium tube form (4)

  • Titanium seamless tubes are made by piercing and drawing solid titanium bars, and the hollow part of the tube is made by piercing or hot extrusion. Titanium seamless tubes are ideal for very large diameter to wall thickness ratios and have very good external dimensional tolerances.

  • Titanium welded pipe is a tubular product made of strip titanium that is roll formed and fusion welded along the longitudinal seam. The welding process used by Daxun Alloy does not use any filler metal during the welding process.

  • Titanium square tubes are drawn from round tubes or round tube billets and can be formed into right angles or rounded corners. They can also be cold extruded, which is efficient and low cost. The only disadvantage is that the tolerance will gradually increase.

  • Tubular products are welded and then re-drawn to final size. Welding and drawing is ideal for producing thick walled, large diameter tubes that cannot be welded directly to size but still offer cost savings over seamless tubes. All Daxun welded and drawn tubes are bright annealed.

What is the main difference between CP Grade 3 and CP Grade 2 titanium pipe?

The primary difference is the oxygen content, which directly impacts strength. CP Grade 3 has a higher oxygen content (0.10-0.27%) than Grade 2, giving it approximately 20-30% higher tensile and yield strength. This makes Grade 3 suitable for applications requiring more robust pressure handling and mechanical performance, while Grade 2 is often chosen for its superior formability.

Is CP Grade 3 titanium pipe weldable?

Yes, CP Grade 3 has excellent weldability using standard titanium welding procedures, most commonly TIG (GTAW) and MIG (GMAW) welding. It requires proper inert gas shielding (argon or helium) to prevent contamination of the weld pool, but it can be reliably welded to itself or other CP titanium grades.

When should I choose CP Grade 3 over a titanium alloy like Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V)?

You should choose CP Grade 3 when excellent corrosion resistance is your primary concern and the mechanical demands are moderate. Titanium alloys like Grade 5 offer much higher strength and are better for high-stress structural applications. CP Grade 3 is more cost-effective than titanium alloys and provides superior corrosion resistance in many environments, making it the ideal choice for piping, heat exchangers, and chemical processing equipment.

How does CP Grade 3 titanium compare to 316L stainless steel?

CP Grade 3 offers vastly superior corrosion resistance, especially in chloride environments like seawater, where 316L is prone to pitting and crevice corrosion. Titanium is also about 40% lighter than steel and has a much longer service life in aggressive environments. However, 316L has a lower initial material cost. The choice depends on whether long-term durability and corrosion resistance outweigh upfront cost.

Does the grade of titanium affect the cost?

While the grade of titanium does increase the cost slightly, the total cost is primarily determined by the shape and form of titanium you require.

At DAXUN, we offer a wide range of titanium products, including tubes, tubes, coils and bars. The length, width and quantity of each item you require will affect the amount you pay at checkout.
