While the quantity of nickel and chromium in grade 316 stainless steel plate is also significant, the addition of molybdenum improves the plate’s resistance to corrosion, particularly against chlorides and chlorinated compounds. An additional low carbon version of 316 stainless steel is called 316L. Furnace plates, maritime pipelines, and chemical processing equipment all employ it. This is an austenitic steel that, with prolonged cold working, acquires a minor magnetic quality. The molybdenum additive is the cause of this grade’s exceptional resistance to corrosion.
