Type 409 Stainless Steel (UNS S40900) is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel that has higher oxidation and corrosion resistance than carbon steel. The ease of manufacture, paired with its corrosion resistance and affordability, has considerably increased its use in automotive exhaust and other non-automotive applications. ASTM A240 specifies three (3) subcategories of Type 409 stainless steel: UNS S40910, UNS S40920, and UNS S40930. Each of these designations has slightly different Ti or Nb stabilization requirements. Unless the purchaser specifies otherwise, any of these compositions may be given as UNS S40900. It is manufactured with improved formability properties known as “High Performance” or “Ultra Form” in the industry.
