Direct answer: Alloy 690 is an established material for replacement PWR reactor vessel head penetration nozzles, but a certificate for UNS N06690 bar does not establish an accepted nuclear component. Define the approved product form, material condition, drawing, code of record and supplier qualification route before requesting a quotation. Subsequent machining, welding interfaces, examination and traceable release records remain part of the owner’s controlled component package.[1][2]

DAXUN / TECHNICAL PROCUREMENT
Define the supplied item and its evidence before treating a material certificate as component approval.

The purchase must identify the upper-head penetration nozzle and the stage at which the supplier’s responsibility ends. A length of starting material, a machined blank, an examined nozzle and an installed pressure-boundary assembly are different deliverables. Calling each item an “Alloy 690 nozzle” conceals the differences that determine price, documentation and acceptance.

This guide concerns control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) and control element drive mechanism (CEDM) penetrations in a pressurized water reactor’s upper closure head. It does not cover pressurizer heater sleeves, bottom-mounted instrumentation penetrations, fuel assembly nozzles or steam-generator heat-transfer tubing. A head penetration passes through the vessel head and interfaces with other components and welds; the NRC’s historical description illustrates why the nozzle, attachment region and thermal sleeve should not be confused.[4]

For procurement, mark the scope directly on the approved drawing. Identify which dimensions are supplied finished, which surfaces retain machining allowance, and which interfaces another responsible organization will complete. Include the drawing revision in the quotation request. A supplier cannot resolve a disagreement between the material schedule and a drawing note merely by choosing whichever requirement is easier to meet.

DAXUN manufactures Alloy 690 bar and rod and performs agreed material processing and machining in-house. For this application, the first commercial step is a review of the requested starting-material or machined-material scope against the purchaser’s controlled requirements. Material manufacture does not, by itself, establish nuclear supplier approval, certification of the finished penetration or authorization to install it. Any safety-related supply commitment requires a separately verified qualification and acceptance route.

Keep that division visible throughout the order. The quotation, inspection plan, item identification and shipping description should name the same deliverable. If the buyer requests a finished component but the quotation only covers material and machining, resolve the difference before production rather than leaving it for receiving inspection.

Alloy 690 addresses an established material-degradation concern, but it does not remove the need to control fabrication and inspection. Westinghouse describes closure-head replacement projects using Alloy 690 and Alloy 152 in response to the primary-water stress-corrosion cracking susceptibility of legacy Alloy 600 base material and Alloy 182 weld material. That confirms the application; it is not a qualification of every heat or manufacturing route.[1]

Primary-water stress-corrosion cracking, or PWSCC, must be considered as an interaction between the exposed material, its local condition and stress, and the water environment. The purchasing consequence is straightforward: a better base-alloy choice cannot validate an unspecified material condition, an undocumented processing change or a weld interface that was never included in the acceptance review.[2][3]

Avoid asking a supplier to guarantee that 690 is “PWSCC-proof.” A more useful request is to identify the approved material specification, the condition to be delivered, the subsequent work permitted and the evidence available at each handoff. These are matters that can be checked against records. An unlimited-life assertion cannot be verified at material receipt.

Also keep replacement selection separate from an operating plant’s decision about an existing indication. This article does not decide whether a nozzle should remain in service, be repaired or be replaced. Those decisions depend on the plant’s responsible engineering organization, applicable examinations, evaluations and regulatory basis. An alloy comparison is not a flaw assessment.

Bar, a specified forging and seamless hollow stock are not interchangeable simply because they carry UNS N06690. The accepted route must follow the component design and purchase specification, including the applicable edition and any additional requirements. Compare quotations only after that route is explicit.

ASTM B166-25 covers relevant rod, bar and wire products and includes N06690. ASTM B564-25 separately covers nickel-alloy forgings and includes N06690. The public standard scopes establish this distinction; they do not provide a complete nozzle acceptance plan or prove that a particular change of form is permissible.[5][6]
