No universal caustic-service envelope, alloy approval or tightening instruction is implied.

Start with the flange problem, not a preferred alloy

A gasket purchase for a chemical-process NaOH line should begin with the service and flange requirements. “Hot caustic service” is too broad to approve a material substitution, even when the replacement alloy has a familiar corrosion-resistant name. Concentration, contaminants, temperature excursions and the mechanical requirements of the joint all belong in the review.

This guide addresses the procurement decision for chemical-process piping and equipment flange gaskets. It does not provide an installation procedure, a torque schedule or a pressure-temperature rating. It also does not select evaporator shells, storage tanks or process tubing. Those items have different product forms, design requirements and failure questions.

First decide whether the existing gasket construction should remain. A proposed change from a sheet gasket to a spiral-wound gasket is a construction change, not merely a metal upgrade. The selected product must be compatible with the flange and its allowable loading. A chemically attractive material should not be accepted before that mechanical review is complete.

Keep suitable nonmetallic and composite options in the enquiry when the construction has not been chosen. Garlock’s chemical guide differentiates named compressed-sheet and GYLON products, with product-specific ratings and notes. Such information supports review of those sheet products; it cannot be transferred directly to the filler inside a different manufacturer’s spiral-wound gasket. [10]

DAXUN manufactures nickel and nickel-alloy material and performs agreed rolling, heat treatment, slitting and finishing in-house. For a winding-strip order, define that material and processing scope explicitly. Nothing in a raw-material quotation establishes that DAXUN has qualified a complete proprietary gasket design or the customer’s installed flange joint. The gasket manufacturer and responsible engineering authority must approve the stages within their scope.

Identify every constituent in the proposed construction

List every gasket constituent. Flexitallic identifies Nickel 200 and Inconel 600 winding options separately from fillers and rings; catalog availability does not approve an arbitrary combination for the process. [1]

Item to identify

Information to request

Procurement mistake to avoid

Metallic winding

Exact alloy, raw-material specification, supplied state and winding-feedstock dimensions

Assuming that the outer-ring description identifies the winding metal

Filler

Exact product or formulation and its applicable service evidence

Treating every product with the same polymer or graphite label as equivalent

Inner ring, where required by the selected design

Material, geometry and applicable drawing or specification

Removing it because an unrelated catalog offers another construction

Outer or centering ring

Material, coating if specified, marking and dimensional basis

Assuming that a color code establishes the entire component list

Use the component list to locate the exposure question. Ask the gasket manufacturer which constituents may contact process fluid under the design and foreseeable operating conditions. Do not decide ring material only from the appearance of an unused gasket. If a constituent is deliberately specified differently from the winding, record why and obtain the appropriate approval.

Color is an initial cross-check: Flexitallic groups Alloy 600 and 625 under gold. Establish exact identity from the order and supporting records, not that color alone. [1]

For a replacement, request the original component designation and approved drawing revision. A purchase description copied from an old stores entry can omit the filler grade or ring configuration. If that description cannot be reconciled with the design record, treat it as an open technical question. A physically similar part is not evidence that the replacement has the same approved construction.

Build the service description around ranges and events

Specify normal service and credible excursions; nominal temperature and concentration alone leave the exposure undefined.

The FSA/ESA Gasket Handbook connects fluid compatibility, operating conditions and mechanical behavior. Its guidance on load loss and failure does not approve a universal NaOH concentration-temperature pair. [8]

Service input

Useful form of the information

Question it resolves

NaOH concentration

Normal, minimum and maximum concentration in wt%, including the measurement basis

Which chemical conditions must the compatibility review cover?

Contaminants and other fluids

Identified impurities, cleaning fluids, flushing media and test fluids; limits where known

Does the supporting evidence cover more than nominal pure NaOH?

Temperature

Normal, design and credible excursion values in °C or °F, with duration and cycling

Which exposure history must be evaluated?

Pressure

Operating and design values with units and gauge/absolute basis; relevant transients

What mechanical service cases must the joint review consider?

Flange and bolting

Standard, size, Class or design basis, facing, drawing and specified fastener details

Which gasket geometry and loading conditions are applicable?

Required performance

Leakage criterion, purity requirements and approval authority

What constitutes an acceptable completed assembly?

For concentration, state whether a number describes the delivered chemical, the circulating process or a local operating condition. Do not substitute a supplier’s chemical concentration for the value needed at the gasket location. Where the process team cannot yet define an exposure, mark the uncertainty and request a bounded design case from the responsible engineer.

Include shutdown, cleaning and test exposures in the review. An approval limited to steady operation does not establish suitability for every maintenance condition; the process owner must define those additional cases.

Record the time associated with an excursion. A maximum temperature without duration tells the reviewer less than a defined event with an expected frequency. Likewise, identify whether a proposed change affects only routine operation or also the design envelope. Do not allow an informal change to the operating description to silently expand the approved service.

Request the selected product’s permitted pressure-temperature combination. Separate maxima or a flange Class label do not establish the completed joint’s allowable operating point.

Compare Nickel 200 and Alloy 600 without inventing a crossover

Compare candidate winding metals against the identified exposure and manufacturing route; there is no justified universal rule that selects one solely from the words “hot caustic.” The buyer needs a documented materials decision for the project, followed by approval of the selected gasket construction.

Alloy 600 can undergo stress-corrosion cracking in hot, highly concentrated alkalis; it is not immune to caustic cracking. [6]

Special Metals warns that extended exposure of Nickel 200 above 600°F (315°C) can cause graphitization. It describes Nickel 201 as avoiding grain-boundary carbon or graphite embrittlement when not in contact with carbonaceous materials. This distinction requires review of carbon-containing gasket constituents; it does not approve a graphite-filled combination. Chlorates and oxidizable sulfur compounds are additional corrosion concerns. The temperature is a metallurgical review point, not a gasket rating. [7]

Do not insert Nickel 201 into an order that specifies Nickel 200 merely because both appear in a raw-material standard. If an alternative is proposed, request written approval of the alloy, delivered state, subsequent processing and complete gasket combination.

Ask the reviewer to identify what the corrosion evidence actually represents. Was it obtained for the alloy and condition being proposed? Does it cover the relevant concentration, contaminants and exposure duration? Is it a general material assessment, or evidence for the exact gasket product? Those distinctions determine how far the conclusion can reasonably be applied.

Do not convert a published bulk-material corrosion rate into a guaranteed life for thin winding strip by dividing thickness by the reported rate. That calculation would require assumptions about the relevant attack mechanism, geometry, local exposure and acceptance criterion that a general table does not establish. If service-life justification is required, assign it to the responsible materials and joint engineering review.

A purchasing comparison can still be useful without a universal winner. List the open conditions for each candidate, identify the evidence needed to close them and request comparable quotations against the same approved feedstock specification. A cheaper or more highly alloyed option is not equivalent if its technical exceptions remain unresolved.

Approve the filler as part of a defined product

Filler selection needs chemical and mechanical evidence for the chosen construction. A broad material name cannot establish how the assembled gasket will behave at the required temperature, load and exposure.

Garlock’s materials training describes PTFE cold flow and thermal expansion as relevant properties. Generic material temperature information is not a rating for every filled PTFE product, thickness or spiral-wound configuration. [2] In a preloaded joint, creep-related thickness loss can reduce bolt load and sealing stress, creating a leakage risk. [8]

Ask the gasket manufacturer to identify the exact filler and the applicable product data. If the quotation says only “PTFE,” determine whether it refers to a specified formulation and whether the supporting data cover that formulation in the proposed gasket. If a graphite product is proposed, request its identity and the evidence relevant to the service and any additional project requirements.

Document a proposed filler substitution with the original product, replacement, reason and approving responsibility. The application review must address that exact change before it reaches a production order.

Additional claims need their own evidence. If the project requires a fire-related qualification, cleanliness limit or other special performance, identify the exact requirement and the product-level test or approval being supplied. The generic presence of graphite, PTFE or a corrosion-resistant metal is not the requested qualification.

Request a written application review against one identified product and service description. Combining best-case numbers from unrelated catalogs creates no qualified assembly.

Material, gasket and joint records answer different acceptance questions; one stage does not automatically release another.

Keep raw material, finished gasket and joint approval separate

Three different releases are involved: the metallic feedstock, the completed gasket and the assembled joint. It is not a substitute for material selection or the selected gasket’s product data. This guide does not reproduce its licensed requirements or derive a field tightening procedure from the public catalog. [4]

The purchase order should identify who approves each release. The material manufacturer can provide the agreed feedstock records. The gasket manufacturer needs to connect that input to its finished product and applicable acceptance evidence. The owner or designated engineering authority must close the joint design and service requirements. Inspection or third-party witnessing can support those decisions when specified, but it cannot erase an unresolved design question.

Make revisions part of the release package. If a filler or ring material changes after the original approval, update the component list and the affected product review before shipment. If the flange drawing changes, confirm whether the gasket approval still applies. A document package is useful only when it describes the same revision of the product that will be installed.

Ask for joint evidence that matches the design method

The requested gasket data must match the method used to assess the joint. A generic catalog sheet may identify a product without supplying the characteristics needed for a particular calculation or qualification requirement.

The ESA Gasket Database describes gasket characteristics determined using EN 13555 for use with EN 1591-1 calculations. That is a defined relationship between test information and a calculation method, not a claim that every listed product is approved for every chemical service or for an unrelated design basis. No product-specific numerical database values are reproduced here. [9]

Ask the responsible engineer to identify the required inputs and their acceptable sources. A request for “all available gasket data” can produce a large file without the information needed to make the decision. A more useful request names the selected product, the applicable method, the required characteristic and the service or test conditions attached to it.

Distinguish product evidence from installed-joint evidence. A report for a gasket family may support a material or design review, while a project acceptance test addresses a particular assembly under specified conditions. Neither should be described more broadly than the work actually performed. Record the tested item, procedure, conditions, acceptance criterion and result when such testing is required.

Keep the evidence roles separate: an ambient leak test addresses its stated test conditions, while hot-service compatibility and assembly conformity require their own applicable records.

This article intentionally gives no universal torque value or instruction to retighten a hot joint. Such actions require the approved procedure, qualified responsibilities and the applicable site controls. Procurement can require the correct procedure and records without attempting to create a field procedure from a material supplier’s webpage.

Use failure observations to refine the enquiry

A leak does not identify its initiating cause. Use the observations and service history to decide which material, component or joint questions need investigation.

Observation or concern

Question to investigate

Evidence useful to the review

Conclusion to avoid

Metallic constituent appears attacked or cracked

What was exposed, in which condition and for how long?

Component identity, operating history and appropriate examination

“A higher alloy number will solve it”

Sealing performance changes during operation

Does the selected construction retain the required behavior under the actual conditions?

Product data, joint review and relevant test or operating records

“Chemical compatibility proves sealing performance”

Replacement marking differs

Does the supplied component list match the approved item?

Order, drawing, identification and supporting records

“The color is close enough”

Gasket does not match the flange

Are size, facing, construction and dimensions correctly specified?

Approved flange and gasket drawings; dimensional inspection

“The same nominal size guarantees a fit”

Feedstock documents are complete but gasket documents are missing

Where does the material-to-product evidence chain stop?

Traceable finished-product records and agreed conformity evidence

“The raw-material certificate closes the whole order”

For a returned item, preserve identification and the known service history through the site’s established handling and investigation procedures. State what is directly observed and what remains a hypothesis. Do not describe a mechanism as confirmed merely because it is common in a general reference.

Ask whether the problem began after a change: a different filler, an alternate ring material, a new batch, a cleaning change or a revised operating condition. A change list can focus the review, but temporal association alone is not proof of causation. The investigation should decide which observations and tests are needed to distinguish the plausible explanations.

When proposing a corrective action, connect it to the identified issue and a verification step. A revised material selection requires the relevant compatibility review. A document mismatch requires traceability closure. A dimensional discrepancy requires the approved geometry and inspection result. Treating all three as an alloy upgrade can leave the original problem unresolved.

Before evaluating a replacement trial, define its acceptance criterion and record the exact components and conditions. The result supports that evaluated combination, not every product in the same material family.

Specify winding feedstock so its identity survives manufacture

The feedstock order should preserve material and processing identity through conversion into the finished gasket. For DAXUN’s metallic material, specify the exact alloy, raw-product standard, final condition, thickness, width, edge requirements and coil arrangement. Confirm the requested dimensions and in-house processing route in writing before production.

Ask the downstream gasket manufacturer which incoming characteristics its process requires. Those requirements should come from the actual winding and product design, not from an arbitrary tolerance copied from another supplier’s website. Where a trial is needed, identify the material condition, process inputs and acceptance authority before the trial is performed.

The agreed document map should connect heat identity to the supplied coil or strip lot and then to the downstream product records. DAXUN can provide the specified manufacturing and inspection documents for its supply scope. The gasket maker must maintain the next connection in the chain; the customer’s acceptance process should be able to reconcile the final product with the approved component list.

Use a formal change record for any proposed deviation. Identify the original requirement, proposed alternative, affected quantity and person or function responsible for approval. A commercial concession should not be described as full conformity to the unchanged specification. It also should not silently authorize the same deviation on future orders.

Review heat-treatment requirements at the metallic-feedstock stage where relevant to the order. Do not transfer a bare-metal processing recommendation to a completed gasket containing other constituents. Confirm the packaging and identification requirements needed to preserve the agreed strip condition and prevent the document chain from being lost during delivery.

Submit the approved metallic-feedstock specification and processing requirements to DAXUN, with the service context and downstream acceptance needs clearly identified.

Submit two connected enquiries with clear responsibilities

A useful procurement package separates the material enquiry from the finished-gasket application review while giving both parties the shared service context. This lets DAXUN quote a defined metallic supply and processing scope without implying that a raw-material quote approves the complete flange joint.

For DAXUN, provide the approved alloy and product specification, required state, strip dimensions and tolerances, edge requirements, coil restrictions, quantity and document package. Identify the gasket maker’s incoming acceptance requirements and any trial or witness hold points. If the alloy is still under review, label the enquiry as a candidate quotation rather than an approved substitution.

For the gasket manufacturer and responsible engineering authority, provide the NaOH concentration range and contaminants; normal, design and excursion temperature-pressure cases; cleaning and test fluids; flange and bolting drawings; selected construction; all component materials; and the required leakage or other performance criteria. Include the basis for any proposed change from an existing approved item.

Ask each respondent to list exclusions and unresolved inputs. An explicit exception can be assessed before production. An omitted requirement may only become visible after delivery, when correcting it is harder. Keep the approved response with the purchase order so that the commercial and technical descriptions remain aligned.

Use the DAXUN technical enquiry page to submit the metallic-material drawing and procurement requirements. The Inconel material range can help identify the relevant alloy family, but family membership alone does not approve a material for the described service. Request a written scope covering the material, in-house processing, inspection and delivery documents required for the specific order.

Frequently asked questions

Is a spiral-wound gasket always the right choice for hot caustic soda?

No universal construction follows from that service label. Begin with the actual flange, chemical conditions, temperatures and required sealing performance. Retain suitable sheet or other constructions for review when the product has not been selected. Changing construction requires its own engineering review; it should not be treated as a routine upgrade based only on the winding alloy.

Can I specify the same alloy for every metallic component?

Ask the gasket manufacturer to review that proposed component list against the design and exposure. Name each approved constituent in the order so that delivery can be checked against it.

Can Nickel 201 replace specified Nickel 200 winding strip?

Obtain approval for the alternative alloy, supplied state, processing and complete gasket combination. Retain the approved change with the original requirement; the raw-material standard alone does not authorize substitution.

Does PTFE chemical compatibility prove that the joint will seal?

No. Match the exact product to both the chemical exposure and the joint’s mechanical requirements. Obtain condition-specific evidence instead of treating separate catalog maxima as a combined service rating.

Does a raw-material certificate prove B16.20 gasket conformity?

Request finished-gasket conformity records separately from the metallic-material certificate. Reconcile both with the approved component list and then close the joint’s project acceptance requirements.

Can a color code identify the replacement gasket by itself?

Reconcile marking with the approved product designation, component list and records. If those identifiers disagree, hold the proposed replacement for clarification rather than choosing one by appearance.

What should I send if the existing gasket leaked?

Provide the approved component list, flange information, operating history, known changes and factual observations. Follow the site’s investigation controls; distinguish confirmed findings from hypotheses about the cause.

Technical Accuracy Statement

This guide supports procurement review, not installation or pressure-boundary design. It distinguishes raw-material specifications, producer guidance, finished-product evidence and joint qualification. Public standard scopes do not reproduce the full licensed requirements. No universal NaOH operating envelope, service life, tightening instruction or material substitution is approved here. DAXUN’s stated scope is manufacture of the specified metallic material and agreed in-house processing; finished-gasket and installed-joint qualifications require the applicable responsible parties and project evidence.

Last reviewed: September 29, 2026.

Technical Sources

Flexitallic. Spiral Wound Gaskets. 2020 brochure; winding-metal, filler, ring and marking information.
